The goal of Royal Canadian Legions is to honour our veterans both past and present and never forget the sacrifices they made for our freedom. The Deceased Veterans Recognition Program was started three years ago but was re-energized by Comrade George Bush at Branch 24 in Bridgewater.
Comrade Bush was determined to firstly identify grave sites throughout Lunenburg County. He was along with a team of volunteers, researched old records at 28 cemeteries and found the final resting sites of 438 veterans. While doing the research Bush was able to locate 17 veterans that had not in the past been discovered. Once the sites were located the volunteers went to the cemeteries and placed a Canadian Flag at each grave marker to honour the deceased. These flags will remain in place until the November 16, 2024, and will be removed for the winter.
This program Bush said will continue to grow with more cemeteries researched and veteran gravesites discovered to allow more veterans to be honoured for their sacrifice to our country. If you have information of a loved ones final resting place or would like to assist in the program, please contact the Bridgewater Legion at 902-543-3203.
